NATIONAL SANITATION DAY CLEAN-UP EXERCISE HELD AT AHOMAHOMASO ON 7TH FEBUARY, 2026

Introduction

The National Sanitation Day is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and improving public health in communities across Ghana. On 7th February, 2026, a sanitation exercise was organized at Ahomahomaso to improve waste management practices, promote stakeholder collaboration, and encourage community participation in maintaining a clean environment.

Communication and Sensitization Activities

Communication and sensitization formed an essential part of the National Sanitation Day exercise held at Ahomahomaso on 7th February, 2026. These activities were aimed at creating awareness, encouraging community participation, and promoting proper sanitation practices among residents.

-Public Announcements

Information about the sanitation exercise was disseminated through community information centers and public address systems prior to the exercise. Announcements were made to inform residents about the date, time, and importance of the sanitation exercise. This helped mobilize community members and increased participation.

-Community Education

Environmental Health Officers and community leaders conducted educational sessions to sensitize residents on:

  • The importance of maintaining a clean environment
  • Proper waste disposal methods
  • Health risks associated with poor sanitation
  • The role of individuals and households in environmental cleanliness
These educational interactions helped improve public understanding of sanitation and hygiene practices.

-Stakeholder Engagement

Key stakeholders including Assembly Members, Unit Committee Members, traditional leaders, and youth groups were actively engaged in sensitizing residents. Their involvement enhanced credibility and encouraged community members to support the sanitation exercise.

-House-to-House Sensitization

Some sanitation personnel and volunteers undertook house-to-house education to encourage residents to actively participate in the exercise and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. Residents were also advised to properly store and dispose of household waste.

-Demonstration of Proper Sanitation Practices

Participants were educated on proper sweeping, waste collection, and safe handling of waste using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Demonstrations helped participants understand practical sanitation methods and safety measures.

  • Impact of Communication and Sensitization

The communication and sensitization activities resulted in:

  • Increased awareness of sanitation responsibilities among residents
  • Improved community participation during the exercise
  • Enhanced understanding of health and environmental benefits of sanitation
  • Strengthened collaboration between community members and sanitation authorities

In Objectives of the Exercise

The main objectives of the sanitation exercise were to:

  • Promote environmental cleanliness within the Ahomahomaso community.
  • Create awareness on proper waste disposal and sanitation practices.
  • Prevent sanitation-related diseases such as cholera, malaria, and typhoid.
  • Encourage community members to take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings.

Timely Deployment of Waste Management Teams

Waste management teams were deployed promptly to designated operational areas within the community. The early arrival of Environmental Health Officers, sanitation workers, and volunteers ensured that activities commenced as scheduled. The teams were well coordinated and assigned specific locations such as streets, market areas, public spaces, and drainage systems. The timely deployment contributed to the smooth execution of the sanitation exercise and increased overall productivity.

Availability of Sanitation Tools

Sanitation tools such as brooms, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and refuse skip containers were made available for the exercise. These tools facilitated effective sweeping, waste collection, and clearing of gutters, public spaces and final disposal of refuse. The number of tools was adequate, which required participants to share the equipment. T

the exercise was successfully carried out.

Availability and Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment including hand gloves, nose masks, and protective boots were provided to sanitation workers and some volunteers. The use of PPE helped to protect participants from direct contact with waste and potential health hazards. However, not all participants had access to complete PPE, which highlights the need for increased supply and strict enforcement of PPE usage during future exercises.

Stakeholder Engagement

The sanitation exercise involved collaboration between the Assembly and key stakeholders including:

  • Hon. District Chief Executive
  • District Coordinating Director
  • Assembly Staff
  • Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit
  • Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members
  • Traditional and Community Leaders
  • Youth Groups and Volunteers
  • Residents of Ahomahomaso
  • Local Council of Churches
  • District Police Command
  • NADMO
Stakeholder involvement contributed to effective coordination, mobilization of residents, and supervision of activities. Community leaders played a vital role in encouraging participation and promoting sanitation awareness.

Community Participation Rate

The sanitation exercise recorded 220 participants from community members, particularly youth groups and sanitation workers. Residents actively engaged in sweeping, waste collection, and clearing of drains. However, some households and individuals showed low interest in participating, indicating the need for intensified public education and enforcement of sanitation regulations.

Proper Waste Disposal

Waste collected during the exercise was properly gathered into refuse skip container and transported to approved disposal sites. This helped prevent indiscriminate dumping and contributed to improved waste management practices within the community. The presence of waste collection teams ensured that accumulated refuse was promptly removed from the community.

Impact on Environmental Cleanliness

The sanitation exercise significantly improved the environmental condition of Ahomahomaso. Choked gutters were cleared, refuse dumps were removed, streets and public areas were cleaned. The exercise helped reduce potential breeding grounds for disease vectors such as mosquitoes and flies, thereby contributing to improved public health and environmental sustainability.

Challenges Encountered

Some challenges observed during the exercise included:

  • Inadequate PPE
  • Insufficient waste transportation logistics
  • Need for continuous public education on sanitation practices

Recommendations

To improve future sanitation exercises, the following recommendations are proposed:

  • Provision of adequate PPE
  • Strengthening stakeholder collaboration and supervision
  • Intensifying community sensitization and education
  • Enforcement of sanitation bye-laws
  • Improving waste transportation and disposal logistics

Conclusion

The National Sanitation Day exercise held at Ahomahomaso on 7th February, 2026 was successful and positively impacted environmental cleanliness within the community. Continued stakeholder support, adequate resource provision, and sustained community participation are essential for maintaining sanitation standards and protecting public health.
